Ferndale 7 v Kewford Eagles 0

Kewford U15 travelled to Mill Lane to play a friendly against a Ferndale team a year above their age group. They battled well, although on the back foot a lot of the time, and held Ferndale for 20 minutes before Sophie Johnson rose like a salmon in the six yard box to head in a well deserved goal. After seeing several attempts off target, striking partner Chelsea Mudge was relieved to get her first of the game 5 minutes later and double the lead. Kewford battled well and had to bring the best out of keper Jenny Chillington to keep a clean sheet. Chelsea Mudge got her second just before the half time break.

The second half started well for Ferndale who really controlled the game from the centre, allowing Mel Zaffino to get her first goal since re-joining the team. With Sophie Bradshaw getting on the scoresheet and Sophie Johnson bagging 2 goals to make a hat trick the game finished at 7-0.

Kewford played some really good football at times and i feel sure will do well in their league for the rest of the season.

Well done girls with player of the week going to hat trick hero Sophie Johnson

Bilbrook 2 v Ferndale 1 (Mudge)

As it goes, the better team on the day won the game. Not without a typical Ferndale fight though. With Sophie Johnson out with ligament damage and Emma Lacey unfit to play, Ferndale went with the bear 11.

Bilbrook were a good physical side and were giving Chelsea Mudge a hard time up front, not allowing her to play her game. Bilbrook were first to score when a shot across goal saw the strong wind help roll it into the net. 10 minutes later and Chelsea Mudge got the better of her defender, beating the offside trap and slotting it neatly past the keeper to bring the game level again.

The second half started with Bilbrook being very strong and Ferndale on the back foot. It wasn't long before Bilbrook took the lead for a second time by heading a great corner into the top left corner.

Ferndale battled well and started to come on strong in the last ten minutes. Chelsea Mudge got a second goal with 5 minutes to spare, but the goal was dissallowed when the linesman had ruled the ball out of play when Chelseas pinched it from the defender.

All in all a good game of football by both teams and a fair result on the day.

Well done Bilbrook.

Ferndale 8 v Redditch Utd 0

(Mudge 34, 52, 72, Zaffino 50, 70, 77, Ireland 55, Bradshaw 64)

This was the first meeting of the season between these two teams (strange how the fixtures go). A double hatrick from Chelseas Mudge and Melissa Zaffino stole the rewards of the game.

From the whistle Redditch were the first out the blocks and managed to fire the first shot of the game wide of the upright. This woke the girls up a bit, and without captain Sophie Johnson, vice captain Kirsten Oliver, was in fine voice encouraging the team on and closing play down. Jess Richards had a good chance to put Ferndale in the lead but her shot was weak and easy for the keeper to save.

It took 34 minutes for Ferndale to break the Redditch defence when Charley Ireland ran down the right, crossed into the box and Chelsea Mudge headed in from 4 yards. This was the only goal in the first half.

The half time team talk ws about getting the ball down and passing it around a bit more. The girls responded well and got 3 goals in 5 minutes Mel Zaffino getting her first since rejoining the team, Mudge bagging her second and Charley Ireland getting on the score sheet. This seemed to unsettle the visitors who then struggled to get any attacking going and the Ferndale girls seem to settle and start passing the ball around more. The remaining goals came from Sophie Bradshaw, Chelsea Mudge and 2 from Mel Zaffino.

A well deserved result from the girls.

Reditch United 1 v Ferndale U16 1

A frustrating game for the girls as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Redditch United.

Both teams were fielding 10 players and Redditch were keen to make up for their last meeting when they lost at Ferndale. From the whistle Redditch were always first to the ball and closed down everything, stopping Ferndale getting any fluency in their game. Mel Zaffino was having an excellent game in midfield and forced the opening goal on 28 minutes when Charley Irelands corner was met by Mel who forced it through the home sides defence on the goal line.

As much as this goal got Ferndale the lead it failed to lift their game and Redditch were the ones with the better play up to the half time whistle, but failed to get a goal for all their efforts.

The second half saw Ferndale lift their game slightly but not enough to extend the lead and 10 minutes in from the re-start Redditch levelled the game.

The dissapointing factor was that the girls struggled to lift their game and although created more chances, the home keeper was on top form and made sure they got a well deserved point for all their efforts.

Well done to all the Redditch team who deserved what they got.

Banbury Utd 0 v Ferndale 1 (mudge)

Ferndale travelled the long journey to Banbury looking to improve on the 6-0 drumming dished out the first time the teams met.

From the whistle, Ferndale took 10 minutes to settle down and start playing some good football, using the wingers and beating the offside traps. Sophie Bradshaw played a midfield role with Kirsten Oliver, supporte by Mel Zaffino, and were dominant in winning position and feeding balls wide or through to the front two of Chelsea Mudge and Sophie Johnson.

It was one of those games where chances came but couldn't be finished. Keeper, Jenny Chillington, was rarely tested.

The second half was much the same with Ferndale dominating play and 5 minutes from the end, got there reward as Chelsea Mudge lobbed the oncoming keeper, giving Ferndale 3 valuable points.

A fantastic display of football by the girls and Banbury will be dissapointed not to have got something out of the game as this was the first game they had lost since the christmas break.
